We often get many questions about what to do after a massage, so we sat down and asked Melissa Dunsieth, RMT for her professional opinion.
What is the best thing to drink after a massage? How much should I drink?
Drink plenty of water, herbal tea or non-caffeinated fluids to encourage lymphatic drainage and proper hydration. A great blend of herbs can be found in a cup of our complimentary Relaxation Tea (ingredients: chamomile flowers, lavender, oatstraw, lemon balm herb and passionflower herb). Sip slowly and enjoy.
The ideal amount of fluids to consume is the equivalent in ounces of approximately half of your body weight in pounds. So, if you weigh 160 pounds, you should aim for 80 ounces (10 cups) of fluids.
I’ve heard an Epsom salt bath is good for after a massage: true?
Enjoy an epsom salts bath with at least two cups of Epsom salts (magnesium sulfate) for 20-30 minutes. This will reduce lactic acid build up, muscle soreness and pain following treatment, and encourage general relaxation.
Can I exercise after a massage?
Rest. Rest is important to allow your connective tissue to recover and to reduce inflammation – avoid vigorous exercise immediately following treatments.
What are some things I can do at home after my massage?
Follow the home care, exercise, stretching, hydrotherapy and strengthening recommendations given by your RMT. Start slowly and avoid doing too much, too soon.
How soon should I come back for a follow-up?
Follow-up scheduling will vary depending on your health concern. It is important to follow the protocol planned by your RMT in order to ensure the temporary relief you feel becomes a permanent state of comfort.
Don’t hesitate to ask your RMT when you should follow-up to maximize benefit of treatments if they don’t recommend a follow-up time for you.
